Kaumātua Programme
Kaumātua Programme helps older people stay in their home
Turanga Health's flagship programme is the Kaumātua Programme - an holistic approach to elderly wellbeing involving health checks and a social get-together.
It's been run by Turanga Health for 21 years for local pakeke to have their monthly warrant of fitness. The aim of kaumātua days is to maintain koroua and kuia in their own home setting. It's available to all kaumātua and the Turanga Health kaimahi and the programme itself moves around participating Gisborne marae. Each marae takes care of the catering and a range of community services are provided depending on the kaupapa of the day. A typical day beings with a karakia, followed by a health check where Turanga Heatlh community nurses check blood pressure, diabetes and oxygen levels. All kaumātua are welcome and morning tea is provided followed by activities and then a substantial healthy lunch before the kaumātua are transported home.
