Being a healthy Māori male is about drawing strength from one’s cultural identity and heritage.
At the Turanga Health Hauora Tāne programme whānau come from all walks of life and are all shapes and sizes. The appeal of group exercise is whakawhanaungatanga.
Most of the participants are referred by general practitioners or other Turanga Health staff who recognize that a bit of help with exercise and healthy eating will lead to enormous health gains for the tāne.
Each intake has around 10 participants who commit to a 10-week programme. Whānau can be any age.
In winter the fitness sessions, which resemble circuit training, are run in the well-equipped Turanga Health gym. Summer programmes make more use of the natural environment.
